The essentials of playing Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe

Open Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe, check the instructions and begin a round. Win three mini-boards in a row on the large board. Use the example below to understand a decision. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Same-device two players.

Take a closer look while playing

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your objective

Win three mini-boards in a row on the large board. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Notice how the game responds to your input.

The steps to play

  1. Play inside the required mini-board.
  2. Your selected square sends the opponent to the corresponding mini-board.
  3. A closed required board permits play in any open board.
  4. Win local boards, then a large-board line.

Making selections and moves

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.

Work through an example

A top-right cell sends the next player to the top-right mini-board. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the controls nearby.

A mistake to avoid

A single local win does not finish the overall game. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
