Sokoban: how a round works

Try Sokoban at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Push every crate onto a target. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Read the objective before making your first input. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Give this approach a try

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Keep the objective visible.

What counts as success

Push every crate onto a target. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

The steps to play

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Keyboard and screen controls

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

One way to understand the rules

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Compare the situation with the worked example. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
