Canfield Solitaire: rules and examples

Try Canfield Solitaire at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Thirteen reserve cards, four columns, draw-three recyclable stock. Free solo play, no wagering.

A small practice goal

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

Step by step

  1. Build tableau runs down in alternating colours, wrapping ace to king. Reserve cards refill empty columns automatically.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

Making selections and moves

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

An example to follow

With base rank 5, a foundation runs 5 through king, then ace through 4. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.

A useful caution

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. Compare the situation with the worked example. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
